Eco Cabins Western Cape: Remote Accommodation

We have developed a number of luxury cabins nestled on the mountainside, not far from the major metropolitan hub of Cape Town. Its close proximity to the city is belied by a true sense of peace and tranquillity, immersed as our cabins are in nature. Each is designed with care, intended to convey a sense of luxury without losing the aspect of rustic charm one would expect and want from a cabin on the unspoiled mountainside.

They are well-appointed and comfortable, accommodating any guests’ needs and more. Whether in the coldest depths of winter or the warmest summer’s day, these cabins are the perfect place to rest and relax. We understand that a key priority for our guests escaping the city is privacy, and each cabin has been built far enough away from the others to offer you a true sense of solitude and serenity. While staying at our eco cabins, you can get a fully remote and luxurious experience while deeply submerged in nature.

Eco Cabins Western Cape: Where Are We Located?

Our cabins are spread over sixteen hectares of repurposed farmland, sitting on the slopes of the Rooiberg. This is situated just outside of the farming town of Worcester, which is around 73 minutes from Cape Town. This means that reaching our property from the big city is no hassle at all, making our cabins the ideal destination for a quick weekend getaway. Spend less time and money on the effort of travel, and dive straight into a world of relaxation.

This farmland was first established almost two centuries ago in the year 1831. Sixty-eight years later, the farmland was sold off to Willem Johannes Krynauw, who did little to develop it. The property has remained largely unchanged, letting the natural growth of the mountain flora take its course and blanket the property in diverse fynbos. This has been aided by the presence of two mountain streams that run through the property, feeding the plant life and attracting plenty of animals, too.

We intend to keep it this way, as it would be a sure pity to have this beautiful nature lost to human development. We also understand that this is exactly what our guests want: being deep within nature, far from the noise and pollution of city life. Our cabins are built to maximise this experience and take in the best views of the surrounding nature, both within the property and from the over 8000 hectares of natural land that surrounds it.

Eco Cabins Western Cape: Hiking and Exploring

Being well-placed on the mountainside, our cabins are the perfect home base for a few hiking adventures, long or short. The mountains of the Western Cape make for spectacular hiking, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from not only the rest of the country, but internationally too.

With gentle meanders, steep climbs and everything in between on offer, the surrounding wilderness is open to everyone to explore. On our property, you can take a number of small and easily navigable trails to see more of the mountains, including beautiful rock formations, rock pools, diverse plant life and two mountain streams.

While many people typify African nature with the sprawling savannahs of the northern reaches of South Africa, the natural wonders surrounding our cabins are some of the most biodiverse and fascinating in the world. Unlike savannahs, much of the wildlife is small and delicate, easily missed when viewed from the comfort of a car.

As such, hiking makes for the perfect opportunity to witness the beauty of the Cape Floristic Region. Visitors can marvel at the many kinds of flowering plants and their rich perfumes, the colourful insect life and the elusive animals that call this region home.

There is also no denying that hiking, or even just walking, is a great health benefit, offering a functional form of exercise that enriches both the body and the mind. What better way to take advantage energy given to you by fresh air and restful sleep than to use it to go on a hike? Walking through the trails surrounding our cabins can be incredibly meditative and rejuvenating.

Eco Cabins Western Cape: Birdwatching and Wildlife Spotting

As we’ve touched on, exploring the mountainside gives you the chance to see all kinds of wildlife that are easily missed. Birdwatching is one of the more popular activities in the mountain wilderness, as the area is teeming with remarkable bird species.

The many flowering plants, their fruits and seeds are attractive to species like the Cape sugarbird and a variety of sunbirds, marvelled at for their long tails, jewel colours and fine beaks. During the day, you might spot a circling eagle or a peregrine falcon. At night, you may observe a hunting spotted eagle owl, known to be entirely silent in its flight.

As you wander the fields, you’ll find plenty of small animals like reptiles warming themselves on sun-baked rocks as well as many different kinds of insects that pollinate the fynbos, such as butterflies, bees and glittering beetles. Some of the more notable examples of local wildlife are among the mammal species, which tend to be elusive but incredibly rewarding to spot. You may see the Cape porcupine, genets, small antelopes, caracals or, if you’re very lucky, a Cape leopard.

Eco Cabins Western Cape: Sustainability And Protecting Nature

With so much marvellous nature around us, we are compelled to do our best to protect it. From our side, we do this by developing the land as little as possible and building our cabins in a way that makes them minimally intrusive upon the landscape. We also ask that our guests adhere to certain conduct around wildlife, helping protect nature and secure its enjoyment for future visitors and generations.

When hiking, stay on established paths and avoid trampling any plant life. Do not pick any flowers or uproot any plants. If you should encounter wildlife, keep a safe distance to protect both yourself and the animal.

Be careful with any food you bring with you, and keep it out of sight of baboons. Do not feed any baboons, as they can be dangerous and may become dependent on humans for food. Do not litter and keep all trash with you until the time comes when you can dispose of it in a proper bin.

Fires are another point of concern in this region, as wildfires can be easily sparked and very difficult to stop, especially in the dry summer months. Only make fires in designated areas, and never leave a fire unattended. Before leaving a fire pit or heading to bed for the night, extinguish all remaining embers thoroughly. Remember to also keep fuel sources and flammables away from the fire. If you should see any signs of fire in the bush, contact the relevant authorities immediately.

By staying with us, an environmentally conscious retreat, you’ll also be helping to protect nature by supporting a business that upholds sustainable tourism.

Eco Cabins Western Cape: Discover Local Culture and Cuisine

If you desire a little day trip outside of our property to explore the region and embrace the local culture, there is much to enjoy. The surrounding Breedekloof Valley is full of small farm towns brimming with charm and opportunity. The region has a rich agricultural history, rooted in a blend of Dutch settler, indigenous and Malay culture, resulting in a unique and vibrant place as well as welcoming and friendly locals.

More than just beautiful old farmhouses, the area boasts many outstanding restaurants serving superb cuisine made from farm-fresh ingredients. There are also plenty of establishments selling local artisanal goods and crafts.

This is all without mentioning the wine, which has gained worldwide acclaim for its quality. There are many beautiful wine farms to visit, most offering tours and tastings. While at our eco cabins, we recommend visiting the Breedekloof Wine Valley or the Worcester Wine and Olive Route.

Visiting places like these helps to support local rural economies, strengthening them and making future visits more enjoyable. Speaking to the locals, tasting the wines and enjoying the food will only add to the overall experience.
